    New NHS campaign to cut medicine waste in Coventry and Warwickshire

    Coventry and Warwickshire NHS has launched a new campaign aimed at reducing medicine waste, particularly from repeat prescriptions. Officials estimate that around 1.6 million items of medicine are wasted in the area each year. People are being advised to check the medicines they already have at home before ordering repeat prescriptions to avoid unnecessary waste. Reviewing medicines at home can help prevent expired medicines from being used and reduce risks to children and pets.

    Coventry school where kids ‘love to learn’ is first in city to be graded with new Ofsted system

    Sidney Stringer Primary Academy was the first school in Coventry to be rated under the new Ofsted system. Single-word overall grades such as outstanding or inadequate have been scrapped in favour of fuller and fairer judgements. Instead, Ofsted now uses a ‘report card’ system, handing out grades across a range of areas. It’s hoped this approach will give parents a broader picture.

    Business leaders in action plan to guide future of Coventry’s tourism strategy

    Coventry’s hospitality, tourism and leisure industries are joining forces to help create a new Tourism Action Plan for the city. It is hoped the work will boost the profile of Coventry as a key tourism player within not just the West Midlands, but the UK and internationally. The final plan will be an advocacy document to help regional and national agencies understand the needs and potential of the visitor economy in Coventry.

    Police warning as countdown begins for Atherstone Ball Game 2026

    Warwickshire Police have issued a warning ahead of Atherstone’s annual Ball Game. The historic event will take to Long Street in the heart of the town centre on Shrove Tuesday, February 17. This year is the 826th Ball Game and the annual event attracts huge crowds. The force said, in 2024, that organisers would have to stop the game if violence broke out. It came after violent scenes emerged from the game in 2023 which were caught on camera and went viral.

    Decision confirmed for takeaway plans close to Coventry school

    Proposals were to turn one of the three former welfare centre units off Broad Street into a hot food takeaway. The application stated: “The site is a former Welfare Centre, its use was ceased a few years ago” Council did not agree and a decision made made to refuse the plan. Three reasons were given in the decision notice and two were concerns about the impact that the takeaway could have on the health of those who live and go to school in the areal.

    University death as police issue major update on student victim

    Body of Carla Georgescu, 19, was discovered at the University of Lancashire. Officers rushed to the scene following reports of a “sudden death” A 34-year-old man from Hartlepool has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Police are not thought to be looking for anyone in connection with the investigation. University said staff and students were “deeply saddened by the tragic loss”
