ICE HOCKEY – Coventry Blaze see winning run halted at eight after remarkable Giants comeback
Belfast staged a stunning comeback to take the game to overtime and then took the extra point in the additional period. That came after Coventry battled to a 2-1 shootout victory against Nottingham Panthers at Motorpoint Arena – the club’s eighth successive victory. Convicted child sex offender back behind bars for refusing to let police access his phone
Stanley Heames, 41, was jailed for six years in 2017 for a series of sexual assaults on a girl under 13. He was arrested when officers raided his home in September, acting on information that he had been accessing child sexual abuse material on his phone. A phone was hidden underneath a windowsill at his property, but Heames repeatedly refused to hand over the passcode to unlock the phone. Heames admitted the offence in December and was sentenced at Warwick Crown Court earlier this month.

NSPCC Midlands reports rising number of AI related concerns
NSPCC Midlands has reported an increase in contacts from young people worried about artificial intelligence and online safety. Three in five young people are worried about AI being used to make inappropriate pictures of them. Experts say children are encountering AI in ways that can be harmful, from reading alarming news stories to being targeted with doctored images used for blackmail. On Internet Safety Day the NSPCC emphasize the importance of conversations between parents and young people about online habits.

Teenagers found dead at Dorset nature reserve in suspected ‘suicide pact’ – Inquest
Jack Williams, 18, and Katherine Powell, 17, had a child together. Their bodies were found at Bothenhampton reservoir, near Bridport. Mr Williams was first arrested on November 22 2021 on suspicion of possessing an indecent image of a child. He was then re-arrested, with Katherine, on January 19 2022, on the same offence. Coroner Brendan Allen said that neither Katherine nor the couple’s child were the subject of the alleged image.

Man found dead at Ryton Pools Country Park
Man found dead at Ryton Pools Country Park in Warwickshire. Paramedics were called to the park at around 6:42am this morning (February 9th) A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said there was nothing that could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene. Man dies after crash on M69 near Ansty
A man has died after a crash on the M69 this morning (February 9th) near Ansty. Emergency Services were called to the northbound carriageway just before 6am. Driver believed to have suffered a medical emergency at the wheel. Despite the efforts of ambulance staff the man was pronouced dead at the scene. The northbound M69 carriage is still closed between the M6 and Nuneaton.

M69 in Warwickshire closure expected to ‘remain ongoing for several hours’
The M69 in Warwickshire is closed northbound between the M6 J2 / A46 near Coventry and J1 (A5 /Nuneaton) National Highways have said it’s due to a serious collision which occurred shortly after 05:30 this morning. As a result of the collision, a significant amount of central reservation barrier has been damaged. The closure is expected to remain ongoing for several hours throughout today.

Change could be coming to Coventry’s fire service as locals asked one thing
West Midlands Fire Service has launched a consultation into how it responds to emergencies. It says that there has been no major change in more than a decade. Chief Fire Officer Simon Tuhill says the time is right to review how it serves its communities, including Coventry. Details of this have yet to be revealed as the fire service says it wants to hear locals’ views first before formulating future plans.

Woman jailed for stealing £60 chicken from Co-op says ‘give me longer’
Emma Britton, 51, is being held at HMP Foston Hall in Derbyshire. The incident was caught on CCTV and she confessed to shoplifting. She turned down the option of an Intensive Supervision Court (ISC) order. Judge Michelle Smith sentenced her to eight weeks in prison. Britton appeared via a prison video link and said: “Can’t you give me longer?”

Coventry planners refuse gym plans at community centre
Plans for a gym and sports hall at a community centre in Foleshill have been thrown out by Coventry City Council. The application for the Coventry Muslim Community Centre, in Red Lane, sought permission to build a single storey front extension and rear first floor extension. It was also planned that the extension would incorporate a kitchen serving a 400-person banqueting hall. But the stumbling point for planners was the loss of parking spaces as a result of the scheme.

Opening date confirmed for new coffee chain branch at well-known Nuneaton shop
Bewiched cafe wants to open a branch in the Co-op in Attleborough. The coffee chain has branches across the West Midlands area. It already has 19 cafes across the Midlands area including Balsall Common in Coventry, Leamington and also in Rugby. Barista jobs are being advertised for the new coffee shop, which will be located where the existing staff room, welfare facilities, office and training room are.

King Charles’ former Audi A6 Allroad up for auction in Coventry
The 2015 A6 Allroad 3.0 TDI was a firm favourite of the then-Prince of Wales. The car boasts features such as walnut wood trim, soft-close doors, heated front and rear seats, four-zone climate control, rear window blinds, double glazing and a BOSE surround sound system. It is set to go under the hammer on 21 February at the Race Retro in Coventry.

Man found dead at country park
Paramedics were called to Ryton Pools Country Park, near Ryton-on-Dunsmore. West Midlands Ambulance Service said nothing could be done to save the man. Warwickshire Police cordoned off the site while investigations were carried out. The consultation is open until 13 March, when it will go to an independent planning inspector. Developers will be allowed to build homes in villages near Rugby including Dunchurch and Wolvey.

Council vows to ‘keep the spirit of Godiva alive’
Coventry City Council announced plans to ‘pause’ Godiva Festival this year. Head of events Jon Hogan said the three-day event was no longer ‘financially viable’ ‘Godiva in the City’ will now take place on 4 to 5 July as part of a programme of free and low-cost events. Hogan said audience numbers had dropped in the last two years with customer feedback surveys putting ticket costs as the biggest reason.

Man behind a third of town’s Tesco thefts jailed
Scott Warner targeted three different shops across Bedworth, Warwickshire. He was found guilty of 41 charges of theft and sentenced to 40 weeks in prison. The 42-year-old was also handed a criminal behaviour order banning him from entering the stores or wearing face coverings in any of Bedworth town centre’s shops for three years. The Tesco supermarket in Bedworth sits under a hotspot area.

Speedway campaigners hope sport’s return is near
Rugby Borough Council’s draft local plan supports proposals to bring Brandon Stadium back into use for speedway and other motorsports. Brandon Stadium was shut in 2016 when Coventry Bees stopped racing at the stadium after failing to reach a deal to continue there. The stadium’s owners Brandon Estates previously planned to build 124 homes and a football pitch with a pavilion on the site off Rugby Road. The plans were rejected in January 2024.

Man dies on M69 after medical episode behind wheel
West Midlands Ambulance Service called to motorway in Rugby, Warwickshire. Man believed to have suffered a medical episode at the wheel, crashing his car. Paramedics were unable to help the man on arrival and he died at the scene. Flood warnings and dozens of alerts were in place on Sunday evening, the Environment Agency says.
