Why are Christmas decorations taken down on the twelfth night ?
This custom is considered to have started in the Victorian era when society sought to send people back to work after the Christmas celebrations.
Is 12th night the 5th or 6th of January?
From the 25th of December, we can count exactly 12 days to the 5th of January. The Church of England celebrates Twelfth Night on this day. There is, however some reference to January 6th being the 12th night when counting from 26th December.
What occurs if you leave the Christmas decorations up after the 12th night?
A day earlier or later is seen to be unfortunate, and custom says that if the holiday decorations are not taken down on Twelfth Night, they should remain up all year. Enjoy those flashing lights for 12 months !!!
