A Coventry business has offered the Mayor of the West Midlands an advance look at how cutting-edge drone technology may soon be used to transport critical medical supplies.
Andy Street was invited to a private site in Warwickshire to observe how the local business Skyfarer intends to revolutionise the use of drones for the delivery of vital commodities like organs for transplant.
Elliot Parnham founded the business in 2017, initially intending to develop drones but ultimately deciding to employ current technology for the transfer of medical supplies.
He has received assistance from several local organisations over the years, notably the University of Warwick Science Park.
The Birmingham Transplant Sports Team, West Midlands Police officers, and the regional mayor were all invited to observe the drones in action by Skyfarer, which is now conducting trials to demonstrate the technology.
“We brought together three separate stakeholders who each have their own viewpoints and are engaged in what we are trying to do here in the UK, in their own unique ways,” said Elliott.
“From the Birmingham Transplant Sports Team’s point of view, this technology might have been utilised to transport the organs during their procedures. Since seeing is sometimes believing, this may be the future.
“Therefore, it was fantastic to be able to demonstrate what we can accomplish and how we might alter the delivery of essential goods. It was really inspiring. It is quicker and has significant environmental advantages as well because it reduces the number of car trips.
“I can only think what it would have been like to know that my new lungs had been delivered by drone,” said Andy Bright, who underwent a double lung transplant.
This is no longer science fiction, but science reality.
Skyfarer will next conduct tests “beyond visual line of sight” to further validate the system.
“It was amazing to witness a Skyfarer drone in operation and to see up close the practical use of this technology and how it may have a really life-saving impact here in our region,” said Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands. After seen what Skyfarer is capable of with my own eyes, I have a lot of faith in what they can do. They may now obviously go to the next phase of their growth since the proof is there. I’m eager to follow their development.
