Coventry Radio Stations
Free Radio Coventry – Formally known as Mercia Sound, before changing to Mercia FM and changing again to Mercia before being dropped totally. Mercia Sound was the first Radio station for Coventry starting in 1980. After being brought by GWR radio in the 90’s, it was merged with Capital Radio a few years later. The owners became known as GCAP. This was then sold off to Birmingham broadcaster “orion media” as GCAP owned too many radio stations in the area. The station was snapped up by the Birmingham group headed by Phil Riley and moved output to the Birmingham Studios then re-branded all midlands stations as Free Radio. The Coventry studios were closed and sold off to Radio Plus. Free radio is aimed at young family listening. Orion sold to Bauer Media in 2016 which then moved 21 hours output per day to come from its Manchester studios to share the same output as the local Manchester station “Hits Radio”. The same tag line “The biggest hits, the biggest throwbacks” is used on the radio station. Currently they use wise buddah for station jingles and idents. It has not yet been announced if Free radio will formally get rebranded as Hits Radio. The station can be heard on DAB, 97FM,
Capital FM Coventry – Broadcasting 3 hours a day from studios near Kenilworth, Capital FM Coventry broadcasts to Coventry and most of Warwickshire. 21 hours output is a relay of the “Capital FM London” output. Originally called Kix 96, the station re-branded as Touch FM Coventry then created a deal with Global Media to use the name Capital FM and relay the majority of output from London. The station is not owned by Capital FM but is licensed to use the name and share the London output. The Coventry broadcast has local news outputs on the hours and aims teen / twenties market. The station has moved to a number of studios in the city including a church just off the ring road. After gaining licenses to broadcast in Warwickshire Stratford and Banbury, it settled in studios to a more central location near Kenilworth. The station can be heard on DAB, 96.2FM, online or opening the following web address into a media player:
