Due to a major outage affecting many apps and websites, major sections of the internet is down this afternoon (22nd July 2021). Previous issues like these were caused by issues with a major company who administers the web, rather than the corporations that run internet sites.
This time Akamai, a provider of domain name system services, has announced on twitter that it is having issues. Several of the impacted websites are listed on its website page and their updated blog highlighted the issue as configurational and not a cyber attack, feared by many when the internet breaks.
Down detectors graphs are showing the current problem. Airlines, streaming, games and banks are those calling problems. Delta airlines, Call of Duty, HBO Max, and Halifax are all down.
America and UK are reporting similar issues.
About a month ago, there was a severe outage that was ultimately traced to an issue at Fastly. Because there are just a few firms that provide the infrastructure that underlies the whole internet, even a little failure at one of these companies may quickly bring much of it offline.
What is DNS
The domain name system (DNS) is a mechanism that links URLs to their IP addresses. People can search for websites and send emails using familiar names because to DNS, which allows them to input words rather than a string of numbers into a browser.
