Welcome to this week’s Outlook! Here’s what you can expect in today’s edition, recorded on Wednesday, August 7th. We have a range of exciting topics lined up for you. First, we’re heading over to Brinklow where we’ll delve into the life of a pop icon from the 80s, Shakin’ Stevens. Elaine will continue her fascinating exploration of the days of the week, focusing this time on Thursdays. We’ll also hear an inspiring story about a man who, despite being born blind, has set out to visit every country in the world. Finally, Dave will wrap up the program with a visit to the Resource Centre, an event that took place a couple of weeks ago. But before all that, let’s dive into our usual segments: sports, your postbag, and the always insightful report from Joe at the Centre. But first, as always, we begin with the local news from Peter and Elaine.
It’s great to be with you again this week to share what’s happening around the Resource Centre. First up, a quick update: Hugh is currently on his second week of holiday and will be back next Monday, August 12th. In the meantime, I’ve got some important notices for you.
A quick reminder: If you’ve received your blue wallet, please ensure you return it with the memory stick inside. This ensures you receive your next edition on time. Also, double-check that the address card has been flipped in the envelope before returning it to avoid any delays.
In fundraising news, our inflatable 5K event has raised around £900, and we’re hopeful to inch that number a bit higher. We’ll update you with the final total soon.
Another exciting update: Jack, Rose’s grandson, is gearing up for his marathon run on September 8th. He’s already 70% of the way to his fundraising goal of £2,000. If you’d like to support him, donations can be made at the Resource Centre reception or online via the Coventry Resource Centre for the Blind’s JustGiving page.
Our charity shop is open all summer, thanks to some extra help. We’ve got new stock, so spread the word and continue bringing in your generous donations.
Mark your calendars for Thursday, September 12th, when we’ll be hosting the Sound Bath Experience at 6:30 p.m. It’s an hour-long guided sound-based meditation featuring instruments like Chinese singing bowls. The event costs £15 plus transport. Book your spot at reception or give us a call if you need transport arrangements.
We’re also planning a canal boat trip, likely in September, as we’re still finalizing the details. If you’re interested, let Carol or Heather know at reception.
Lastly, I’ve been making the rounds with a “quick question of the week” to get feedback on our services. Your responses are helping us improve, so thank you for participating. I’ll be doing this again in a few weeks with a new question.
Now, let’s move on to some important announcements.
If you’re curious about sunrise and sunset times, the sun will rise at 5:37 a.m. and set at 8:46 p.m., assuming clear skies. As we’re in the middle of the holiday season, Outlook will also be taking a short break. We’ll be back on Wednesday, August 28th, with our next program.
For those interested in Bands in the Park, the next performance is on August 18th at North Mill Park, featuring the Day Spring Steel Band. The final performance of the season will be on September 8th at Coundon Castle Park with the City of Coventry Brass.
Elaine also wants to highlight a recent episode of “Ramblings” on BBC Radio 4, where Clare Balding joined Amar Latif, the blind adventurer, for a walk in North Yorkshire. Amar, who lost most of his vision by 18, has become a familiar figure through TV shows like “Travelling Blind” and “Pilgrimage.” He now promotes accessible walking through his company, Travel Eyes. The episode aired on August 1st and 3rd, and is well worth a listen.
Finally, the British Wireless for the Blind Fund has updated its eligibility criteria for receiving audio devices. To qualify, you must be a UK resident living with sight loss, be registered as sight impaired, and be receiving certain benefits. They’ve also introduced a new Synaptic USB player and several Echo devices, which have been popular among those living with sight loss. If you’re interested in learning more, contact Sarah Howard-Jones at British Wireless Fund.
we’ll be back with more updates in our next edition.
