“The victory extends City’s unbeaten streak in the Championship to six games“
The Sky Blues easily defeated relegation-threatened Huddersfield Town to move up to ninth in the SkyBet Championship.
At the John Smith’s Stadium, Viktor Gyökeres scored twice for Mark Robins’ team, once before halftime and once after. Gustavo Hamer and Tyler Walker also scored.
The victory extends City’s unbeaten streak in the Championship to six games, while Ben Wilson has kept seventeen clean sheets this season, which is a Sky Blues goalkeeper record-tying seventeen.
Ryan Howley almost had an immediate effect in his first Championship start for City, forcing an opening, although a small one. The young man engaged in a game of give-and-take with Matty Godden before crossing the street in search of Gyökeres, just missing his mark.
Gyökeres, however, did score after finding a way past the Huddersfield defence and lofting the ball over Nicholas Bilokapic before the halfway point. The Swedish, who is still very much in the running for the Championship Golden Boot, finished with composure.
Scott High fired a shot into the bottom corner of Ben Wilson’s goal for Huddersfield in response, but the goalkeeper made a fantastic two-handed save to deflect the ball wide.
Shortly after, Howley, who was now settling into the match on his debut, came dangerously near to scoring by dodging a defender and looping a shot just over the Huddersfield crossbar.
Yet, during the final seconds of the first half, the home team appeared to be the more likely to score as High repeatedly tested City with long-range shots.
After the break, City scored right away thanks to Hamer. Fankaty Dabo put in some outstanding effort down the right, first winning a throw-in before using it to slide inside and locate his Dutch-Brazilian teammate nearby. Hamer wriggled inside and quickly located the corner.
After then, the Sky Blues grew and Gyökeres scored eight minutes later to extend their two-goal lead to three goals. The Swedish international found himself once more goal-side of the Town defence and skillfully chose his corner.
Then, with a few seconds left on the clock, Tyler Walker was picked out by Viktor at the back post, and Walker added a fourth to seal the victory.
